Keeping your spa clean is kind of like keeping your bathtub clean. You don’t empty it out as often as your bathtub, but it's important to give it a clean and shine whenever you do. A good rule of thumb is to clean your basin every time you drain and refill the water. This prevents staining of the shell and can prolong its useful life. Knowing when and how to clean your spa makes it easier to maintain. Here are some tips and tricks for cleaning your shell.

Frequency

How often you should drain and clean your hot tub depends on what type of hot tub chemicals and which water system you are using. For example, if you use the ACE Saltwater System, you should drain the water from your spa about every six to nine months. A standard hot tub chemical system that uses a chlorine and bromine regimen should be drained and refilled every four to six months, depending on how frequently you use your spa.

Debris

You don’t have to change the water just because you have debris at the bottom of your hot tub. You can use a vacuum to get rid of sand, stones or other debris that can scratch your basin surface, be uncomfortable on your feet and clog up your spa system. Some come with brush attachments, while others just use a standard vacuum head. There are different types of models, from a hose attachment that comes with wheels at the bottom, to a battery-powered version. The Hot Spring Spa Vac, doesn't use either, functioning with suction instead.

How to Clean the Shell

After you drain your spa, plan on cleaning the shell. You can use a non-abrasive bathtub cleanser, but one made for acrylics is one way to make sure you won't have any scratches. After cleaning, rinse it out thoroughly then drain the spa as you did when it was filled with the dirty water. EcoOne Shell Cleaner is a product that we offer at Hot Tub Spa Supplies. It's non-toxic and contains natural ingredients. Next, make your basin shine by applying a surface wax or polish. Look for one that is made for spas instead of furniture or vehicles. Dry out the basin and buff it with a microfiber towel for best results.
