There are different philosophies on how to close your backyard above-ground pool. Below is one of the methods, along with its advantages.
The best way to help ensure an easier opening in the spring is to close your pool while it is clean and clear. Make sure it is free of all debris, including leaves, as leaves left in the water over the winter are sure to result in a pool full of algae come warm weather. There are several automatic pool cleaners you can use to accomplish this, and work just like a vacuum cleaner.
Once the pool is ready, usually early- to mid-September, a good pool cover is a must. This prevents everything, including animals, from becoming part of your pool. There are cheap covers, but the saying "you get what you pay for" is very applicable in this situation. Invest in a good quality cover, and you will be able to reuse it year after year. We have several quality solar covers in stock. Utilizing air "pillows" help keep rain and snow from building up on your backyard pool when covered. These measure about 3' x 5', and are positioned so the cover is lifted off the water. Another suggestion is to tie down the pool cover. Most come with a wire cord that locks under the top lip of your pool. This helps prevent the cover from moving or blowing off during the winter storms.
Make sure you remove the ladder before covering your pool, as the covers are not designed to fit over the handlebars. Also, make sure all of the water is out of your pool filter, and store it in a warm place, if possible. The water level will need to be reduced to below the water inlet for storage. This can be accomplished by using a pipe or hose attached to the inlet. Beware of where the water is draining, as you don't want to flood your house.
By following these tips, you will close your above ground backyard pool successfully. Opening it again in the spring will be much easier, as well.
